Mellon foundation awards $2.3 million for OLE development

A $2.38 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to Indiana University will be used to develop software created specifically for the management of print and electronic collections for academic and research libraries around the world.

IU will lead the Kuali OLE (Open Library Environment) project, a partnership of research libraries dedicated to managing increasingly digital resources and collections. Together, these libraries will develop “community source” software that will be made available to libraries worldwide.Kuali OLE (pronounced Oh-LAY) partners include Indiana University; Florida Consortium (University of Florida representing Florida International University, Florida State University, New College of Florida, Rollins College, University of Central Florida, University of Miami, University of South Florida and the Florida Center for Library Automation); Lehigh University; Triangle Research Libraries Network (represented by Duke University and North Carolina State University); University of Chicago; University of Maryland; University of Michigan; and the University of Pennsylvania.

OLE Project Completed – Report Available

The OLE Project is now completed. A copy of the final report has bee posted and is available for download here. (See Final Report in the left hand menu.) The final report includes information about the next phase of the project and plans for developing the OLE framework. The Kuali-OLE website will provide ongoing updates.

This program will present work being undertaken by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded Open Library Environment Project. The goals of the project are to develop a requirements document for a community sourced library system that will be compatible with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) requirements. While there are several other projects (Evergreen, Koha) developing open sourced and community sourced library systems, this project seeks to establish the library system as a component of the academic enterprise technology infrastructure.

The following is a recording of the the OLE Project webinar hosted on April 23, 2009. The webinar presentation provides an overview of the CollectionSpace project timeline, milestones software architecture, and philosophy of the CollectionSpace data model.

Carl Goodman provided an overview of the CollectionSpace open-source, description and mangement application for the museum domain. Tim McGeray then lead the conversation where Carl was joined by Megan Forbes and Patrick Schmitz both of CollectionSpace. The main focus of the conversation was about data models and how data models affect the similar goals of CollectionSpace and OLE Project.

The Connecting with Other Projects Working Group will host a public conversation webcast with CollectionSpace on Thursday, April 23 at 3:00pm (EDT) CollectionSpace is a collaboration that brings together a variety of cultural and academic institutions with the common goal of developing and deploying open source, web based software applications for the description, management, and dissemination of museum collection information.

The webcast will be available by registration and a recorded session will be available for playback.

The following is a recording of the the OLE Project webinar hosted on April 8, 2009. The webinar presentation provides an overview of the CUFTS software and knowledgebase.

Brian Owen and Kevin Stranack joined the conversation hosted by John Little and Michael Winkler. Brian and Kevin provided an overview of the CUFTS ERMS open source application, its link resolver and knolwedgebase. The interview covered the deveopment platform, community of users, methods for achieving enhancements, as well as an overview of the milestones and timeline for future developments. The webinar concluded with a Question and Answer session.

The conversation is part of the ongoing work of the “Conecting with Other Projects” Working Group, a sub-group of OLE Project and was annouced as an event earlier on the oleproject.org site.
